The duty of a journalist is to tell the truth

Browsing through the close-out book sale at Borders today, I took a gander at the “media” section, picking up journalism reference books, Hunter S. Thompson novels, and the Page One: Inside the New York Times movie participant media guide.

I read yet another inspiring journalism quote in a book that I picked up and felt the urge to share:

“The duty of journalists is to share the truth. Journalism means you go back to the actual facts, you look at the documents, you discover what the record is, and you report it that way.” – Noam Chomsky, professor and author

In this day and age, you never really know what is behind what you’re reading. In many cases, news articles are taken with a grain of salt and a dose of skepticism. Let’s get back to true, honest reporting. While removing ones opinions and feelings is inevitable, it would be nice to know that basic articles can be written in a purely objective way.

It’s always interesting to see how the newspaper industry is forever shifting based on the issues of our time. That is why we needs quotes like this to bring us back to our main objective.
